Charities
We all like to do good things when we can. At Change Agent, we know that New Zealand’s future will be shaped by today’s children, including the future workforce. So we’re investing in future talent by donating 10% of the cost of each job ad to charities that give Kiwi kids a better start to life. These charities are ‘KidsCan’, Enterprise New Zealand’s ‘SmartStart’, and ‘Enviroschools’, and the money will be split evenly between them.

Referrers can also contribute to the cause, by donating some of their cash reward to any combination of these three charities.

Why did we pick these charities to support?

Together, our charities of choice cover child’s health (KidsCan), child education (SmartStart) and environmental awareness (Enviroschools). We believe that these three areas are vital to New Zealand’s clean, green future, and to the future of Kiwi kids and adults alike.

And of course, children are going to grow up and join the workforce. They might even become Change Agents! So we’re also supporting these charities to help make our future workforce stronger.

How are we helping out (and how can you)?

10% of the cost of every ad posted on Change Agent goes to our charities. So every time you post a job as an employer you’re helping out. And if you’re a referrer you can contribute too. When you receive notification that your referral candidate has been placed in a job, you’ll be asked if you’d like to donate any of your cash reward. Then just type in the amount and we’ll split it evenly between the three charities.

Here’s some more detailed information about each charity...

Kids Can Stand Tall KidsCan

As the official charity for the All Blacks, KidsCan are dedicated to meeting the basic physical needs of financially disadvantaged children, leveling the playing field for them so they have the chance to reach their full potential. By raising awareness and looking after children in our own backyard, KidsCan are helping them to become successful, happy adults. Four programmes have been carefully developed to increase levels of self esteem by encouraging equality and pride.

‘Raincoats for Kids’ helps financially disadvantaged children to arrive at school warm, dry and in a better position to learn. Low decile schools report high rates of absence in winter as many children simply do not own a raincoat. Each year over 10,000 free adidas All Blacks raincoats are provided to children from low income families to keep them warm and dry in winter helping to reduce ill health associated with exposure to cold and/or wet weather.

‘Shoes for Kids’ is the second KidsCan programme helping children to arrive at school warm and in a better position to learn. By providing free quality footwear and socks for children who consistently come to school in winter without shoes, or with shoes that are in bad condition, little feet are kept warm and dry in winter and the frequency of foot injury and illness is reduced.

‘Food for Kids’ currently provides free food at school for over 7,500 financially disadvantaged children a week. Children living in poverty can never be sure of receiving three meals a day, often filling their tummies on what they get out of the school water fountain. We are sure you will agree all kids deserve to have full tummies, regardless of whether their parents are good people struggling to make ends meet or those who waste money and neglect their responsibilities.

StandTall is the latest programme to be developed by KidsCan and will launch, initially in Auckland, in 2009. Co-founded by Mark Hotchin, StandTall is a motivational programme developed for low decile primary schools. The aim of the programme is to provide inspiration and challenging excursions to instill pride and increase confidence. Successful New Zealand business, sports, arts and entertainment personality’s act as StandTall ambassadors and role models accompanying children on each outing and developing ongoing positive relationships with them and the school they attend. ASB Smart Start SmartStart

SmartStart is a suite of innovative and integrated financial literacy and enterprise education programmes and resources, for students from Years 1- 8.

The Financial education (FED) component provides teachers with a range of tools and resources to develop financial capability in their students. Resources and activities in the FED suite include board games, story books, economics lessons, and teaching and learning tasks to support the development of financial capability in primary students. Resources, assessment tasks and professional development to support the Ministry of Education’s “Figure It Out” Financial Literacy books are an integral part of the package.

The Primary Enterprise Programme (PrEP), Technology Enterprise Learning Link (TELL) and Business for Kids (BFK) programmes provide authentic contexts for students to practice and enrich their enterprise and financial literacy skills.

PrEP provides an innovative, fun and integrated way of delivering New Zealand’s curriculum. Students from Years 1-8 design and operate their own functioning community. They form their own government, hold jobs and have market places for their goods and services.

TELL is an exciting programme, operated within school over one to four weeks that integrates aspects of Education for Enterprise and the technology component of the New Zealand curriculum. TELL provides teachers and students with an authentic context for teaching and learning within the primary technology curriculum.

BFK is a one-week holiday programme, run independently by schools and community groups. The programme challenges students to run their own economy, create jobs for themselves and their peers, earn income, run business ventures and buy and sell their products and services on market day. The programme encourages the involvement of caregivers and community stakeholders to both enhance student learning and create links between business and schools. This initiative provides an opportunity for participating organisations to generate income.

All SmartStart programmes are supported by relevant resources and teacher professional development. For more information about SmartStart please visit www.enzt.co.nz

EnviroSchools Enviroschools

Imagine … a generation of innovative and motivated young people, who instinctively think and act sustainably. What would they be doing? What decisions would they make?

The Enviroschools Foundation is committed to empowering young people to contribute to a sustainable world. As an innovative nationwide school programme where students plan, design and create sustainable communities, the Enviroschools Foundation runs their programme in collaboration with a number of national and regional agencies. From small beginnings as a community partnership in Hamilton, they are now active in over 570 schools (22% of all New Zealand schools). Enviroschools continues to grow and gain momentum every year.

The formal education sector has a large contribution to make to sustainability. Around a third of New Zealanders are children and young people. Enviroschools offers them a chance to be actively engaged in decision-making and action from their own unique perspectives. Schools form an Envirogroup, make a vision map and work through locally relevant projects. Resources specific to this programme assist schools to explore five theme areas: Precious Energy, Zero Waste, Living Landscapes, Ecological Buildings and Healthy Water.

Their successful approach is to build a network of schools committed a long-term change process. Enviroschools is a framework for ongoing education, not simply a project that is ‘done’ and then left to move on to the next topic. Through the Enviroschools process students make their schools a more sustainable place to live and learn. For more information about Enviroschools please visit www.enviroschools.org.nz
